Mazama Taffic Planning

For two years a group of all the owners in the Mazama intersection area have been meeting on how each of their proposed developments can work together. They have addressed county roads, public spaces, private ownership, and support services such as signing, snow storage and maintenance. Planning It has been a unique opportunity to combine ideas to produce a product that will benefit everybody. The owners asked the Mazama Advisory Committee to help facilitate the planning effort.

One of the proposals from the group was to ask the county to lower the speed limit approaching the intersection and to replace the three way stop with a more traditional four way stop. It was felt that with ever increasing pedestrian use along with the proposed business developments, that it makes sense for a slower speed in the immediate area. The county has explained what would be necessary and we are now seeking public input. county meeting There will be a petion at the Mazama store and a hearing to assure the proposal reflects the desires of our community.

Mazama Household Income Survey - 2009

Claire Bunney and Midge Cross are working with the Okanogan County Planning Department to apply for a grant continue the planning process of the Mazama Core area . (See notes on meeting held March 5. The Mazama Advisory Committee has been facilating a planning effort with property owners at the core of Mazama. )

In order to complete the grant application process, a survey of Household Income for full time residents in the Mazama area is required. The information will not be used for any other reason and is completely anonymous and confidential.

Please take a minute to complete the survey form, and drop it in the mail in the provided envelope. If you have questions about the survey, please send an e-mail to Claire@methownet.com

Notes from the public Meeting May 27, 2009

The Mazama Advisory Committee held a community meeting on Wed, May 27th at 7:00 p.m. at the Mazama Community Center to provide an update to the progress of the County Comp. Plan, specifically the Mazama LAMIRD (LAMIRD is a Growth Management Act term describing areas like Mazama that are not incorporated into a town,” Limited Area of More Intensive Rural Development” ).

Notes from the public meeting March 5, 2009

A public meeting was held on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at the Mazama Community Center, to initiate discussions regarding future development of the Mazama “core” or “corners” area. This area is the three way stop at the junction of Goat Creek and Lost River Roads. The Mazama Advisory Committee has been facilitating discussions with involved land owners as to possible opportunities of coordinating future development in the area.

Comments on the Comprehensive Plan and Zoning code

The following letter was officially submitted in testimony to the Planning Commission. Our key emphasis is we do not want to loose any of our points from our existing Upper Methow sub unit A plan. Some additions to our Sub Unit A plan have been submitted to the county based on our public meeting last spring along with a more consolidated and updated vision statement.

Scoping Comments on the Comprehensive Plan

The Okanogan County Comprehensive Plan is being updated. It was orginally done almost 40 years ago. Fortunately for the Mazama Area, (the entire valley in the Methow river drainage north of Winthrop) we have a Comprehensive Plan that was updated in the 70's and again in 2000 with input specific to our area. Last spring, our committee held a public meeting to recieve additional input on our vision statement and additional items that should be addressed in any comp plan update for our area. The Mazama Advisory Committee is wanting to make sure that any revision of the Okanogan county plan not dilute our existing Mazama Plan. We want all the provisions that the people in the Mazama area have developed to be maintained. Below is a letter touching on some of our concerns.

Upper Methow Valley Comprehensive Plan

Most of the planning in the Mazama area is based on the direction in the Upper Methow Valley Comprehensive Plan. This plan is also know as the 'Mazama Plan' . It was put together by the residents of the upper Methow Valley in 2000. In the spring of 08 the Mazama Advisory Committee held a public meeting to 'check in' with the community regarding the plan and any needed updates. The Committee is currently working on making sure that all points in our existing Mazama Plan are maintained in the Okanogan County Comprehensive Plan process. To view our current plan,

The Mazama Vision

Mazama when its busy!

A lot goes on in Mazama at times. A group is working on a plan that would make the area safer for pedestrians and more attractive both winter and summer. The group still wants to keep the rural feeling of Mazama.

Design Guidlines for Mazama

A handbook of suggested development guidelines was developed for the Mazama planning area in 1987. Although the guidline document needs updating, it still has a lot of good ideas and suggestions if you are planning to build or buy in the Mazama area. We hope to get the document scanned and posted to this site soon. There are a few hard copies available from the Mazama Advisory Committee. Click on Index to see outline of the guidelines

Planning a project in the Mazama Planning Area???

If you are planning a project in our area and would like to consider comments from the Mazama Advisory Committee, please contact a committee member. (Our numbers are in the book) The county "sometimes" sends the MAC official comment sheets for Planning Commission hearings.

Our committee would like to give you our thoughts up front rather than in a hearing. We have been known to comment at hearings however.

By all means, if you are planning to build, rent, or invest in the Mazama area, you should become familiar with the "Good Neighbor Handbook" published by the Methow Conservancy. Click on Good Neighbor Handbook.
